There is a famous fable about a man walking through a circus observing that the performing elephants were not held in cages or by chains. They were simply held by thin ropes.
This seemed strange to the man so he questioned a worker about it. The worker told him, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them.
As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
It is an interesting thought, one of the mightiest creatures on the planet limited only by its thinking. Many of us do the same thing though. We allow limiting beliefs to negatively impact our lives and our businesses without realizing how powerful we really are.
Here are a couple of things to consider when you find yourself struggling with limiting beliefs…
Eric Thomas, the Hip-hop Preacher routinely shares his incredible story of overcoming homelessness to become one of the greatest inspirational speakers in the world. The mantra that he lives by is the one that he screams from the stage; “I can! I will! I must!” He has impacted millions with this powerful message.
The same is true for you too. You can. You are capable. You are not only capable, you were created to do great things! We live in a world of unlimited resources and education. You can get a doctorate education for free on resources like Khan Academy. You can learn how to sell insurance and start a business on youtube and create resources like the Life Insurance Academy Podcast. Everything you need to be successful is out there.
The only thing that can limit you are thoughts like:
- “I don’t know if I can do it”
- “I’m not smart enough”
- “There is no one to show me”
- “I am not worthy”
- “Life is hard”
HOW TO OVERCOME LIMITING BELIEFS
In his book The Success Principles, Jack Canfield recommends this process of overcoming limiting beliefs.
Identify your limiting beliefs, decide how you would rather be, and create a turnaround statement that gives you permission to think a new way.
Take a moment and practice it yourself. What is a limiting belief? How would you rather be, act, or feel? What is your statement? Give it a try. The shift in thinking will make a world of difference.
Here is some final good news! You do not have to figure this out by yourself.
